Star

A tiny five-pointed star that pops onto the ball and reminds you how small you still are.

Star

The Star is a small, five-pointed collectible object that appears throughout the Katamari Damacy franchise. It belongs to the lower size tier of stickable items and is one of the many everyday and whimsical objects the Player rolls onto the katamari to grow it toward the King of All Cosmos's ever-increasing size quota.

As a small, lightweight object, the Star is typically encountered in the earlier phases of a level, when the katamari is still only a few centimetres across. It is visually simple—a flat, golden or pale-yellow star shape—and its primary role is to help the Player cross the initial mass thresholds that unlock progressively larger collectibles.

Lore & Background

In the cosmology of Katamari Damacy, the King of All Cosmos scatters objects across the universe and demands that the Player gather them back onto a single growing ball. The Star is one of the many scattered items: a small, flat, five-pointed shape that sits on the ground or perches on low surfaces in the level. It carries no narrative weight of its own—it is not a character, not a quest item, not a power-up—but it is a necessary rung on the size ladder. Without collecting enough small objects like the Star, the Player cannot reach the mass needed to stick a chair, a car, or a building.

The Star's design is deliberately simple and cartoonish, consistent with the franchise's aesthetic of treating the entire universe as a toy box. It does not glow, rotate, or emit particles; it is a static, flat shape that the katamari's adhesive surface simply engulfs the moment it rolls over. Its gold or pale-yellow colour makes it visually distinct from the grey and brown tones of many other small items, giving the Player a quick target to spot in a cluttered floor.

Across the franchise—from the original 2004 title through Katamari Damacy SE, Katamari Damacy 3D, and later entries—the Star remains a staple of the small-object pool. It is not rare, it is not hidden, and it does not trigger a special animation. Its value is purely functional and comedic: one more tiny thing stuck to an ever-larger ball, reinforcing the game's central joke about scale and accumulation.

In Their Own Story

The level is a sprawling suburban street at dusk. The katamari is barely bigger than a marble, wobbling over a cracked sidewalk. A single Star sits in a patch of grass near a fire hydrant, its flat golden face catching the last of the sun. The Player nudges the ball forward. It rolls, lurches, and—*pop*—the Star lifts off the grass and slaps onto the ball's surface with a soft, sticky sound. The ball is now a millimetre larger. The King of All Cosmos's voice crackles through the sky: "Good. Now find me a chair." The Player stares at the hydrant. The hydrant stares back. The Star, now a tiny golden bump on the ball, says nothing. It never does.

Reader's Guide

Small tier (roughly the first few size brackets of a level): Stars sit in the lower mass bracket alongside items like buttons, coins, and small pebbles. You can collect them as soon as the katamari exists, since they are among the smallest stickable objects. They do not require a specific unlock threshold beyond the katamari being large enough to physically cover them.

Visual comedy: The Star is flat and two-dimensional, so when it sticks to the ball it simply presses into the katamari's surface like a sticker on a balloon. It does not bend, fold, or deform. It just… sits there, a tiny golden star on a growing sphere of miscellaneous junk. The contrast between its neat geometry and the lumpy, chaotic ball is the joke.

The katamari itself: Its surface is a sticky, slightly glossy material—think wet clay or a very tacky adhesive. Objects do not embed deeply; they rest on top, held by the stickiness. Small items like the Star sit flush. Larger items drape and sag. The katamari has no seams, no texture beyond its glossy sheen, and it grows uniformly in all directions as mass is added.

Rarity / easter eggs: Stars are common, not rare. They appear in nearly every level that contains a small-object phase. There is no hidden Star variant or secret Star in the base game. They are a reliable, low-risk early collectible for players still learning the rolling controls.
