Small Pebble
The humblest stone in all creation, and the first thing the Prince ever sticks.
The Small Pebble is one of the most basic collectible objects in the Katamari Damacy franchise, representing the absolute lowest tier of items the Prince can stick to the katamari. It is a tiny, unremarkable stone found on the ground in virtually every level, and it is typically among the very first things the Prince picks up when a new world is delivered by the King of All Cosmos.
Though it contributes almost nothing to the katamari's mass, the Small Pebble is mechanically and thematically essential: it establishes the core loop of rolling, sticking, and growing that defines the entire series. Without these humble first stones, the katamari never begins its absurd ascent toward swallowing buildings, oceans, and entire planets.

Lore & Background
In the cosmology of Katamari Damacy, the King of All Cosmos demands that the Prince collect objects and return them to the palace. The Small Pebble sits at the very bottom of this mandate: it is the smallest unit of matter the King deems worth cataloguing. In the game's narrative, the Prince is dispatched to a world and must begin with the tiniest fragments of the ground before the katamari grows large enough to swallow anything of consequence.
The pebble is deliberately unremarkable in design—a small, rounded grey or tan stone with no distinguishing features. This is part of the game's comedic philosophy: the cosmos, for all its grandeur, starts with a rock no bigger than a thumbnail. The visual gulf between the King's sweeping, operatic demands and the actual object being collected is a running joke throughout the series.
Mechanically, the Small Pebble requires the katamari to be at its smallest size. Because the katamari begins as a ball only slightly larger than the pebble itself, the very first few seconds of gameplay consist of the Prince nudging a barely-visible ball across the ground, waiting for the pebble to latch on with a soft *pop*. This establishes the sticky, almost reluctant physics of the katamari's surface, a material property that persists no matter how large the ball grows.
In Their Own Story
The Prince stands in a field of pale grass, the katamari no bigger than a marble at his feet. The King's voice booms from the sky, demanding ten pebbles. The Prince rolls the tiny ball forward. It catches on a blade of grass, wobbles, and finally licks up a single grey pebble. The ball is now, perhaps, a millimetre wider. Somewhere above the clouds, the King's ledger ticks up by one. The Prince rolls on.
Reader's Guide
Tier 1 – Smallest objects (pebbles, buttons, leaves, small screws): The katamari must be at its starting size, barely larger than the object itself. The Small Pebble sits here. The visual comedy is immediate: a ball the size of a marble with a single pebble fused to its surface looks less like a growing sphere and more like a lopsided pebble with a friend.
Tier 2 – Small objects (rocks, cans, small furniture): Once the katamari has accumulated enough Tier 1 mass, it can swallow objects several times its own diameter. The pebble, now buried under layers of other debris, is barely visible.
Tier 3 and above – Medium to massive objects (cars, buildings, mountains): The pebble is now a single grain of dust on a sphere the size of a city. The game does not remove it; it simply becomes invisible to the player.
The katamari itself is a distinct material: a dense, slightly translucent, sticky substance that deforms as objects embed into it. It has no seams, no texture beyond a soft sheen, and it stretches and squashes with a rubbery, almost organic feel regardless of the inorganic objects fused to its surface. The pebble, once stuck, is permanently part of the katamari's body—there is no way to remove it, only to bury it deeper.
No pebble in the base game is flagged as a rare or easter-egg item; it is as common as the ground itself.
Did You Know?
- The katamari's sticky surface is a single continuous material with no seams; every pebble, building, and mountain is permanently fused into the same body.
- The Prince character is a small, round figure in a suit whose size never changes regardless of how massive the katamari grows, creating a persistent visual scale joke.
- The King of All Cosmos issues collection quotas and reacts with exaggerated disappointment or delight based on how well the Prince meets them, treating a single pebble with the same gravity as a mountain.
- Katamari Damacy was developed by Media.Vision and published by Namco, with the original Japanese release in 2004 followed by Western and PC ports.
